Eyes Guts Throat Bones, Moïra Fowley

“Fowley’s writing is otherworldly”

This is not the first time I’ve read Moïra Fowley’s writing – and it definitely won’t be the last – but strangely enough, it felt like reading her for the first time all over again. Her writing has never felt so sharp, so matured, and so sure of itself. Even after reading the first few lines, it felt like these stories are the ones that Fowley was always meant to write.

As Fowley’s first foray into adult fiction, Eyes Guts Throat Bones is an extraordinary collection of short stories about queer female bodies, sex and desire, rage and love, and the end of the world. There was not a single ‘dud’ story in this collection, as I find so often with other collections, and it felt like every story belonged in this weird and wonderful creation.

This was as haunting and as brilliant as I could have expected. Fowley’s writing is otherworldly, and her stories are dressed up so beautifully in this gorgeous prose. They’re funny, lustful, moving, and scary. A wonderful blend of mediums too – there was a mini screenplay, a poem, and a mix of perspectives that Fowley merged together so well. An insanely talented piece of work, and so beautifully queer; an incredibly immersive collection that is as angry as it is loving, as frantic as it is calm.
