The Gentleman from Peru, André Aciman

A cosy yet magical read, The Gentleman from Peru is the story of a group of young holiday-goers on the Mediterranean whose lives intersect with Raul, an older man from Peru. What follows is a beautiful tale of love lost and found, exploring mystical past lives and whether they ever truly leave us.

Though the subject matter is slightly more unusual than those of Aciman’s other novels, it is still undoubtedly his: the writing is gentle in the way that it brushes over us and leaves us wanting more; it’s full to the brim with love, sensuality, and gorgeous scenery. The reader can expect to leave this story with goosebumps, feeling like they’ve just spent hours under the sun with someone they’ve just met but felt an instant connection with.

At a time when we’ve all been feeling increasingly overwhelmed, I knew Aciman, one of my favourite authors, could be relied on to transport me to other worlds – even just for several hours. This will, without question, be a book I revisit over and over again.
