This is a tale that was written about Egyptian society in the 1950s, but it is still pertinent for modern times.
In Egypt and in some areas in the Middle East at that time there was a period of hope and change which led to a time of modernity and equality that seems a little forgotten in some places today. For example, during the 50s some women were able to get a good education and could go on to have a successful career.
This is an early book by Nawal El Saadawi who is herself a doctor as well as being a feminist author. It is the story of the need for equality, which is as meaningful now for women in a male-dominated society as it was when it was originally written.
